A New Development

Have you checked out the new clues on the Mystery page yet? What do you think about them? Any ideas as to the place where I should go to look for clues? Let me know as the clock is running and any clues may be gone!

Hi Kristy,
If you go to the link "A Real Mystery,"click on the link at the bottom of the page, then click on the envelope that says "Messages" you will find out what it says near the end of the column. I have the copy of the map.

Sorry it took me so long, I went to check for the cluse in The Austin Fires and found myself pulled in to reading the book all over again!
Here are the clues I found using the numbers on the postcards:
GO RESTAURANT HAIR RED CHECK
it didnt make any sense until I looked at the cards again for references to a restaurant. I think the clues are pointing you towards WENDY'S!
Maybe you should check there. Let me know what you find. This is exciting!

Maybe if you rearrange the clues? Like GO CHECK RESTAURANT RED HAIR? With all the other clues, I have to say your other reader is probably right though: Wendy's is a good bet!

Yes, S. Hounshell & Kristy, Wendy's was the right place. Congratulations on your fine detecting skills!

I followed the map at Wendy's, and after much searching through out the nearby grounds I found a most interesting item indeed!
A cell phone! The name LUCY was spelled out in block letters hanging from it on a cord.

Dear Ms. Slack,
Wow you found Lucy's phone?! I'm not surprised to hear she was sending threatening messages to you too. I am sure that is who was sending them to me. Be careful, I do not know what she is truly capable of.

By the way, I realized that the lawyer's name IS Rodger and not Richard, like I had told you at first. As you can see, he wasn't someone the family knew well or anything. I do not know why Auntie would use some nobody to handle her estate like that! Her father was a lawyer and surely he would have left her in better hands before he passed away! Do you think that Lucy and Rodger know each other more closely than they let on at the meeting?! This just gets stranger and stranger!

Unfortunately the last time I saw Lucy, the only thing she said to me was that she was getting out of town for awhile. She hinted that she knew a secret about Aunt N. but that it is too bad I am too slow to figure things out. I wasn't able to see where she was going, but I did notice she bought some new clothes: a cowboy hat, some jeans (she usually wears skirts or slacks), and some expensive boots.

She also boasted that she already has offers on the family estate. It was all I could do not to cry when I heard that!

Maybe while Lucy is gone I can snoop around and try to get into Auntie's home. There has to be something there for me to find!

Hang in there, Lucy.

Sounds like your Aunt N. was no dummy. I'm sure she must have forseen possible trouble with this cousin of yours and set up some sort of safe guards just in case.

Does seem odd about her choice of lawyers though. Could it be that he's not who he says he is? Did she ever talk to you about him before she past away at any time? I think it would be worth taking a closer look at him. Don't you?

As for looking through your Aunt's place, I think that is a good idea, but don't go it alone. Have any good friends that could accompany you?

Let me know what you discover.

Dear S.A. Slack,

Well, I managed to get into Aunt N.'s house! I know you said to bring a friend, but I just don't know who I can trust any more. I did, however, leave a note about where I was going, just like Stormy did for Lance in your book! That was a really good idea, by the way. It's something I will remember to do from now on.

Anyway, I know that one of the back windows of the house is warped , so it won't shut properly, and I got into the house by climbing onto a plastic crate and prying the window open. I couldn't really find much of anything though, because Rodger ended up there! He let himself in with a key and began searching through the papers and cabinets in the office. I don't know what he was trying to find, but I got out of there as fast as I could without attracting his attention! I don't know what that man may be capable of doing!

Before I had to leave though, I did get a chance to look in Aunt N.'s old bedroom. On the dresser I saw the little wooden box I made for her when I was in grammar school. It has a special way to open it. Inside I found a picture of myself as a child, a baby tooth (not sure whose THAT is!) and a key. I think the key is important for some reason, but I have no idea what for. I am going to send it to you though, because maybe you will figure out what to do with it!

I'll be in touch soon!

Interesting! So Rodger showed up at your Aunt N.'s house with his own key to the place. I am sure he is not your Aunt's real lawyer due to several things that have come to light recently. Stay away from him, Natalie.

I think your Aunt had quite a soft spot for you in her heart. I'll watch for that key you are sending me and we'll find out what it goes to. We'll get to the bottom of this.

Hello S.A. Slack,

I just want to say that I really enjoyed reading your book The Austin Fires. I always like to go to the authors web site to learn more and was delighted to find a new mystery going on! It was fun reading the post card clues and finding the answers in your book. Now I'm hooked and can't wait to see what the key will open. By the way, I'm really looking forward to your next Stormy Winters book.

Happy Writing,

Ann
