The Game Is Afoot!

I love a good mystery! I love to write them and I love to solve them.

Recently I received a postcard in the mail from a reader with a mystery picture on the front and a message written to me on the back. It says that they love my mystery books and wondered if I would like a "little mystery of my own to solve."

I agreed, and now as Sherlock Holmes would say "the game is afoot." I am to expect my first clue shortly.

I will keep you all informed on here and who knows, maybe one of you can help me solve it.

I know something you don't know!
You think that you're like Nancy Drew?
Don't even try, I'm way ahead of you!

Ahh, Nancy Drew? We'll see who's smarter.

Dear S.A. Slack,

I know this will get to you if I send it through your blog! I am writing to you today because I am in desperate need of assistance and I feel that you can be a great help to my situation. I read your book, The Austin Fires; it is very good! More importantly, though, it showed me how smart, capable, and skilled you are! I hope that you will agree to assist me.

You see, Ms. Slack, my dear Aunt N. recently passed away. She and I were quite close, and before she died, she told me that she named me as sole heir to her estate. The problem is, when the attorney went to get the will from his safe, it was missing! By default, this means that everything will go to my cousin, Lucy, Aunt N.’s daughter! Lucy is a selfish brat and she has made no secret that she plans to sell the beautiful old home she grew up in to land developers, as the property it sits on is worth a fortune. Aunt N. did not want that; she knew that I would take good care of the family estate and especially of her collection of top-secret files.

Yes, I did say top-secret files. My Aunt N. was a very accomplished detective, Ms. Slack. She would have loved to read about Stormy and her adventures! Those files are invaluable to me. They represent the lifetime my aunt spent working at something she loved. Sadly, the files are somewhere in the mansion, and I cannot go in there to find them.

Please help me figure out where the will is while I still have time. I lodged a complaint against the attorney and my cousin, and the matter is being looked into, but if a will doesn’t surface, my claim to my aunt’s estate holds no water.

If you have any questions or ever need to contact me, you can do so by posting to your blog. I have complete faith that you can make this situation right!

Sincerely,

Natalie Davenport

Hi Ms. Davenport,

I am sorry to hear about the passing of your Aunt N., and I will do everything I possibly can to help you locate her will.

First of all, who besides you knew of your aunt's wishes that you be her sole heir? Did you or she tell anyone else of this?

Second, I take it that you and your cousin,Lucy, are not on the best of terms? Is there any way you could get her to let you into the mansion for one last look around in memory of your aunt before she sells it? If your aunt is as good a detective as you say, chances are she may have left a copy of her will there in the event something happened to the lawyer's copy. Maybe in her secret files? Is your cousin aware of these files?

How well do you know the lawyer that drew up your aunt's will? You might want to check him out.

By any chance, is your aunt's first name Nancy?

If you think of anything else that might be of help, let me know.

Your friend,
S A Slack

Oh thank you so much for agreeing to help me! I have the utmost faith that you will solve this mystery!

You are correct in assuming that Lucy and I do not get along. We are two very different people. She thinks I am beneath her and won't associate with me if she doesn't have to.

Of course, my aunt knew about this. The way Lucy and her family act is the very reason they were being left out of the will! I do not think Aunt N. would have told anyone about my inheritance, because she did not want anyone to become angry; certainly if Lucy knew I was getting everything while she got nothing, she would have made my life intolerable! In fact, after the will was "lost," I disclosed my status as sole heir, and have now been receiving threatening messages!

As for the lawyer, I do not know him that well. His name is Richard Wilson. To me, his office looked kind of shabby, but I guess my aunt trusted him, or why would she have employed him?

I seem to remember my aunt mentioning in some of her letters that she DID make a copy of her will. She was very cryptic about it though. Maybe she was afraid of the wrong person reading it? I will look through my things and see what I can find.

Oh, and I don't know if Lucy knew about Aunt N.'s files, but she did know about her occupation as a detective. She couldn't care less, though. She is interested in the money to be made from selling Auntie's things, not in the real treasures of her life's work.

I will let you know when I find those letters.

Gratefully,
Natalie

PS Yes, in fact, my aunt's name was Nancy!
